Wonder Woman #1

Wonder Woman #1 of the new DCU 52 was released today.

The story so far is good. Dealing with the sort of things that are good for a WW story; innocents, meddling Greek Gods and fighting monsters. I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way, and I mean this in the most positive way, that story is somewhat like a Xena story. I won't spoil it for you, but it deals with Diana needing to protect a woman and how this woman is the center of infighting between the gods.

Though unlike Xena or even the myths they are both based on, this issue up the ante a bit.

So far I like it and want to see more.

The art is fantastic and Wondy is looking great here.

Wonder Woman on Batman Brave and the Bold!!

If you get a chance, check out the new episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold. While the episode of the cartoon features Batman and Green Lantern fighting Star Sapphire, in "Scorn of the Star Sapphire" Wonder Woman makes her debut in the 3 minute teaser at the beginning of the show. I found it extremely fun as it is both a nod to her silver age persona and very well executed. In the hopes of encouraging you all to check your local TV networks for when "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" airs so you can catch Wonder Woman in "Scorn of the Star Sapphire" I posted the above picture from the episode. If this plays out as it usually does with this show, we can expect a later episode that features Wonder Woman working with Batman. In lieu of a live action TV Show it isn't much, but I found it to be 3 minutes of Wonder filled bliss. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Instead, he begins in a world where there's somebody known as Wonder Woman -- a widely known vigilante hero -- who supports her crime-busting endeavors through merchandising deals, including an action figure. The business is run for her by a character played by Cary Elwes, who keeps reminding her that if she wants to thwart evil-doers, she has to sell dolls, too."

That could have worked. Being barred from Themriscyra, there is a question to how does Diana support herself? Certainly that secretarial job for the Air Force wasn't going to make paying bills a non-issue.

Wonder Woman TV Series Canceled

We didn't get a chance to see the pilot, but the new David E. Kelley Wonder Woman series has been canned by NBC.

EW is reporting that the show now will not be on the Fall schedule.

While I was getting less and less hopeful about the script I was planning on watching it and hoped that even a little Wonder Woman on the TV is better than none.

Looks like we are getting none and this will also cool any movie ideas for a bit.

International Woman's Day

Today is International Woman's Day.

While I think that is great thing I have to ask why more than half of the population only gets one day? Shouldn't women get Spring and Summer and men get Fall and Winter? Anyway I am not here to debate. William Moulton Marston envisioned a world where women would be more highly regarded than they were in his own time (and even than they are now), but failing that at least we can honor his ideals on this day with a picture of his greatest creations.

Wonder Woman in the Killing Joke (sort of)

Tim: I posted this to my own blog as part of my Zatannurday series of posts, but it also has WW in it so I thought I would share here.

There are pivotal comics in in world. Ones that change everything. One such comic is "The Killing Joke". It is the story of Batman and the Joker. But it is also the story of Barbara Gordon and how everything changed for her in one day. How Batgirl was no more and paved the way for Oracle.

But take any game changing moment like that and it is ripe for others to want to look at it anew.

The "Brave and the Bold" banner is for various team ups from across the DC line. One of last year's best was The Brave and the Bold #33, a team up of Z, Wonder Woman and Batgirl (Barbara Gordon). OR My three top comicbook loves of all time. Of course it is a powerful piece, but not in the way you expect.

Now I was never a fan of Babylon 5, but I have always sorta liked J. Michael Straczynski as a writer. He has given me reasons not to like him in the past, but this does not disappoint.

It takes place the day before Barbara's shooting and Zatanna has a vision. We don't know that though. We just know it Z and WW and they want to take Barbara for a girls night out of dancing.

I had no problems with Zee and Wonder Woman not being able to help Babs. Afterall Zatanna doesn't know when it will all happen anyway and she is sure that if she interferes it will only make things worse. I also don't have an issue with her precognition; she is magical and weird stuff like that happens sometimes.

A while back we reported that there was a new WW TV series from David E. Kelley in the works.

Well according to Entertainment Weekly the series may have found a new home at NBC.

'Wonder Woman' project finds a home at NBC

The ol’ girl may fly this fall after all: NBC has picked up the Wonder Woman pilot from David E. Kelley. Ironically, NBC was the final network to pass on bringing back the superhero over a week ago, but that was before the new regime was officially in place in light of the impending Comcast takeover. Robert Greenblatt is now spearheading primetime as chairman. (On Thursday, head of programming Angela Bromstad announced she was leaving).

The pilot’s cost may not be a concern to Greenblatt, the wunderkind who revitalized Showtime with critical faves like Dexter and Weeds. One factor that seemed to have sunk the Wonder Woman project the first time around was the price of rebooting the series, with the studio requiring a rich license fee to bring the iconic character back to life. But then, NBC has been down this road before: It rebooted Bionic Woman. Kelley’s take incorporated the superhero’s signature lasso, cuffs, and plane in the script, and insiders said it was a serious, non-campy take on the DC Comics character. For years, various writers and producers (including Joss Whedon) have tried to bring back Wonder Woman, but the character has proved difficult to resurrect.

Kelley is already executive producing Harry’s Law for NBC, the new drama starring Kathy Bates. The pilot, like all the others ordered by NBC during the current development season, will have to pass the final smell test this spring before its ordered to series in May.

Hopefully we will get to see this soon.

I have faith in DEK as a writer, but watching his shows you realize he has great ideas for 2-3 seasons and then his shows start to fall apart.

I personally thin it is time for a new Wonder Woman series. But they have to get a cameo of Lynda Carter in there somewhere. My vote would be as Hippolyta.

Early Wonder Woman Costume Sketches

A rare Wonder Woman costume planning sketch with back-and-forth notes by artist Harry G. Peter and creator William Moulton Marston (drawn and written a few months before WW's 1941 debut) was recently sold at auction at Heritage Auction Gallery.

The notes read:

'Dear Dr. Marston, I slapped these two out in a hurry. The eagle is tough to handle as when in perspective or in profile he doesn't show up clearly — The shoes look like a stenographer's. I think the idea might be incorporated as a sort of Roman contraption. Peter

Dear Pete - I think the gal with hand up is very cute. I like her skirt, legs, hair. Bracelets okay + boots. These probably will work out + see other suggestions enclosed. No on these + stripes - red + white. With eagle's wings above or below breasts as per-enclosed? Leave it to you. Don't we have to put a red stripe around her waist as belt? Who should be the villain in a Wonder Woman movie?

I've mostly been ignoring Jennifer Love Hewitt's campaign to star in a Wonder Woman movie. Just like I've blown off the rumors and campaigns of people like Jessica Biel, Megan Fox, and Beyonce. It's just not worth having an opinion about until it looks like it might actually happen.

But Nicolas Winding Refn's interest in directing a Wonder Woman is different because he's talking about the kind of story he'd like to tell. I always find it interesting to hear people's takes on what makes Wonder Woman tick and what a good story about her should include.

Refn says that his take would be non-violent (in contrast to the recent, animated Wonder Woman film) and would start from "the whole idea of a woman who is basically more powerful than any man - and who will always be that, and comes from a society of women who are more powerful than men." He adds that that's "an interesting theme that I think can be very contemporary." Absolutely it can, and I'm interested in seeing him explore it.

I also agree with him that one of the biggest challenges in making a Wonder Woman movie is finding the right villain. He thinks a lot about Christopher Nolan's Batman movies and what made them successful:

You need a great, extravagant, marketable action film — and everything that comes with it. But I think that when Christopher Nolan did the Batman movies, I think he very cleverly went back to the source material and took themes that had maybe not been exercised. And he was able to make very good and successful films with them. So I think the audience is very much out there. It’s just how you do it. And I think that some of the films that have worked over the years have worked for different reasons than people sometimes think they do.

And where Wonder Woman on one hand is a great female character who can be included in many great fight scenes, she doesn’t have great villains against her. OK, so you create some. She doesn’t have a Joker or those classic Batman kinds of guys.

...you have to create a great countervillain to her ... The trick with Wonder Woman is to find that antagonist who worked so well in the Batman concept — his villains are equally if not more exciting than Batman himself. Here, it’s basically coming up with who would be a great counterpart to Wonder Woman. Is it her mother who’s the real enemy? Something that’s biblical in a sense.

I'm nervous about the idea of creating a villain specifically for the movie. It could be awesome or completely lame. Maybe it's the way to go, but I'd feel more comfortable knowing that the bad guy was tethered to the comics in some way. The question is: what kind of bad guy does a Wonder Woman movie need and is there anyone in the comics who fits that role?

If I was writing the movie, I'd want to focus on Wonder Woman's status as a role-model for women. Since the defeat of the Nazis, her most potent mission in Man's World has been demonstrating the potential that women have to be powerful and confident. Not shoving her power down male throats, because frankly that's not going to teach anyone anything. Wonder Woman's greatest power is to inspire women to find the power in themselves.

So Wonder Woman's villain needs to be someone who threatens her ability to do that. I'm not sure who that is - and that's where I'd love to hear some thoughts from you guys - but it needs to happen in a way that's personal to Wonder Woman and grounded in the real world.

Or am I completely off base? Should Wonder Woman instead be trying to prevent Ares' starting WWIII? Should she defend Paradise Island against a contemporary Hercules? Should she try to prevent an Amazon invasion of Man's World? Should she just battle giant robot scorpions? Or is Circe or Cheetah or Dr. Poison the way to go? (Ooh, Cheetah... I just gave myself a chill thinking about how cool a movie version of Cheetah could be.) What do you think?
